ROXAS CITY, Capiz, March 31 (PIA) – An indemnity cheque distribution to rice and corn farmers was conducted by the Capiz provincial government, March 29, in view of its Kabalaka Crop Insurance Project.
Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) Public Information Officer Florie May C. Castro said that the province gave out checks worth P560,438.60 to 137 farmers in the province.
Governor Esteban Evan Contreras led the distribution of the amount as payment for rice and corn farmers in the municipalities of Cuartero (53), Dao (26), Dumarao (6), Mambusao (47) and Sapian (5) who have indemnity claims due to natural calamities, pests and diseases during the months of August and September last year.
“We understand the important role of farmers in the province,” said Contreras during a distribution program in Mambusao town, adding that
the farmers are the lifeblood of the local economy.
The project in partnership with the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation aims to ensure government help to farmers who are not included in the Department of Agriculture’s Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA) if calamities damage their crops.
The RSBSA refers to the electronic compilation or database of basic information of farmers, farm laborers, fishermen and target beneficiaries of agriculture-related programs and services of the government such as DA-accredited farmer organizations.
“We thank the Governor that we were able to avail this Kabalaka Insurance as our cropping was greatly affected by floodwaters, said Brgy. Burias, Mambusao farmer Gessa Suresca, in an interview with the Capiz Kabalaka Information Center. (JBG/AAL/PIA Capiz)
