LAKE SEBU, South Cotabato, April 28 (PIA) -- After its success in Sitio Blit, Barangay Ned, Lake Sebu, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is expanding Project TALA to surrounding areas, an official of the agency said.
Rafael Abrogar II, TESDA XII regional director, announced during the turnover of 150 photovoltaic (PV) system in Sitio Blit on April 21 that they have already submitted proposal for additional Project TALA trainings and PV system kits to benefit residents in nearby sitios.
"We have already submitted proposal for other sitios so they too will have lighted houses," Abrogar said. The request was for 650 units of PV system kits (for the same number of households), training, and allowances, he added.
A PV system kit includes a solar panel, solar charge controller, storage battery, two bulbs (3 watts and 5 watts), wirings, switches, junction box, electrical tapes and screws.
For convenience of the beneficiaries, TESDA sends trainors to the target village where they stay during the entire duration of the course.
Each trainee-beneficiary receives P160 per day training allowance as well as P500 for personal protective equipment and P500 internet allowance.
"In return, we ask for one thing, support our government, the legitimate government," he told the participants of the turnover ceremony on Wednesday.
Project TALA (TESDA Alay ay Liwanag at Asenso) is an initiative of TESDA aimed at energizing remote communities that are not yet connected to the power grid by training residents on photovoltaic (PV) system installation and maintenance and distributing complete PV system kits to those who can complete the course.
It was launched in July, 2020 in Sitio Blit as pilot site in response to the challenge put forth by Sec. Lapeña to immediately address the need for electricity, especially in indigenous people communities where connection to power lines could take years to establish.
The first batch of 50 trainees started training in August last year. Since then, TESDA has produced three batches of PV installation and maintenance trainees and have provided solar-powered lighting systems to 250 households in Sitio Blit, including a number of houses in adjacent Sitio Tasaday.
The latest batch of PV system kits turned over to 150 Project TALA beneficiaries on April 21 was already sufficient to light up every house in Sitio Blit, except for very few houses, whose owners, according to sitio leader Dolec Dudim, were families who left their community to find better opportunities but recently returned after witnessing improvements in their village.
