CALOOCAN CITY, April 28 (PIA) -- The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) through the San Juan City Government has completed the turnover of tablets, laptops and pocket WiFi to Parent-Teacher Association representatives and principals of all 13 San Juan City public schools.
This is in fulfillment of their promise to provide all San Juaneño K-12 public school students living in San Juan and studying in San Juan public schools with gadgets to help in their online classes.
The DICT committed to providing all San Juaneño public school students with the needed gadgets in their online classes to help fulfill Mayor Francis Zamora’s Smart City Initiative. This was even prior to the pandemic but has now gained more significance with students only attending classes online and not allowed to attend in-person sessions in their schools to avoid transmission of the virus.
A total of 12,500 tablets, 1,000 laptops and 1,000 pocket WiFis were finally turned over to the San Juan City government by the DICT this month. The completion of the final turnover met with several delays due to lockdowns both from the country where the gadgets were manufactured and in the Philippines.
“I am very happy to finally complete the turnover of all the promised gadgets to our students who patiently waited. We hope that these gadgets make it easier for them to adjust to the new normal mode of education,” Mayor Zamora said and added, “This is not the end of our support to our beloved students in this time of the pandemic. Expect more announcements in the coming days, this time regarding internet for their online education.”
Mayor Zamora is thankful for the support of the DICT to San Juan City. In 2019, the department piloted their Free WiFi For All Program in the city. This enabled San Juaneños to connect to 338 public WiFi access points installed in all public spaces of the city. DICT chose Pinaglabanan Elementary School as its pilot school for distance learning, providing laptops for its grade 3-6 students. DICT also chose San Juan City as its pilot city for the Vaccine Information Management System Immunization Registry (VIMS-IR) which was formally launched last April 13, 2021.
"I would like to thank Sec. Gringo Honasan and the entire DICT team for their commitment to helping me fulfill my goal of making San Juan a Smart City. They have been tirelessly working and helping us even during this pandemic,” the mayor expressed.
While 12,500 students will get tablets, 1,000 students from Grades 3 to 6 of Pinaglabanan Elementary School will receive laptops and pocket WiFi as part of the DICT's Digital Education Program.
San Juan City Public school teachers already received their laptops from the city government last January 2020. Mayor Zamora already provided all 375 public school teachers in San Juan City with laptops - giving a 1 is to 1 ratio between public school teachers and laptops, as part of the Smart City program.
