ILOCOS SUR, Apr. 4 (PIA) – Another fatality due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been recorded here yesterday, April 3, bringing the total death cases in this province to five.
Governor Ryan Luis Singson confirmed the death of patient IS-C638, a 59-year-old female from Barangay Paratong in Vigan City and the wife of patient IS-C590.
Governor Singson said the patient was known to have chronic kidney disease which necessitated her to undergo hemodialysis three times a week.
On March 26, her husband was admitted at the Ilocos Sur District Hospital-Magsingal as a COVID-19 suspect and as per protocol, she was under isolation since then.
However, IS-C638 needed emergency dialysis treatment on March 31 so she was transported to Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center in Batac City, Ilocos Norte.
The RT-PCR swab taken prior to treatment rendered a positive result to COVID-19.
On the same day, the RT-PCR test of her husband also yielded a positive result to COVID-19.
She passed away at 3:45 p.m. on April 3 with the following final diagnoses: acute coronary syndrome; COVID-19 confirmed, moderate; chronic kidney disease, stage V.
The City Government of Vigan also condoles with patient IS-638’s family, relatives and friends in this very difficult time as she was the city’s first COVID-19 mortality.
“We are broken by the fact that her remains will not be interred nor will her husband be with her as he himself is battling with the disease. We grieve that her children will no longer see her smiling at them,” Vigan City Mayor Juan Carlo Medina said.
Meanwhile, Singson also announced in his statement that 55 new cases came in on April 3, elevating the total active cases in the province to 289 – the highest recorded so far.
“You may have monitored the rise in the number of cases of COVID-19 in the province for the past few days and have been as alarmed as we all are. Despite opening new isolation facilities, the increasing number of patients have exceeded our total bed capacity and our facilities are overflowing,” he said.
He added, “We did not feel the wrath of this pandemic until these past weeks after we had been compelled to lower our shields in compliance to national protocols. The situation is now causing an imbalance in the available resources of our community that I had to call for an emergency meeting with all the mayors and stakeholders of health on Good Friday. Please know that your local chief executives are considering every possible means to control the situation.”
“Meanwhile, it hurts to see our provincemates suffer from symptoms of the disease and the effects of isolation. It hurts even more to see our health workers selflessly and endlessly struggling for months to keep us safe. I ask each of you to please do your part by strictly observing the minimum public health standards and limiting your movements to essential travels only.
