TUGUEGARAO CITY, May 5 (PIA) -- The Cagayan Museum and Historical Research Center will host a free month-long webinar series focusing on heritage conservation and management, starting this May 18 up to August 24, 2021.
According to the museum’s head curator, Niño Kevin D. Baclig, the conference aims to level up the understanding and discourse about heritage particularly in Cagayan. The event will involve discussions with an interdisciplinary roster of specialists including international experts.
“When it comes to heritage management [dito sa Cagayan], ang focus most of the time ay preservation, but it is so much more than that and it is multi-disciplinary and multisectoral,” Baclig explained.
“With the help of Crania Heritage Sciences, Inc. in Ateneo de Manila University, whose founder is also from Cagayan, we were able to round up a good repertoire of speakers who are the best in their fields and are recognized not only in the Philippines, but around the globe,” he added.
Some of the speakers include Mylene Lising, Cagayan Valley Cultural Deputy of the National Museum of the Philippines; Dr. Manny Calairo Head of the Committee on Historical Research, National Historical Commission of the Philippines; Dr. Armand Mijares, Grace Baretto, and Victor Paz of the University of the Philippines - Archaeological Studies Program; and Janine Ochoa from the UP Anthropology Department.
Others are Andrea Jalandoni of Griffith University, Australia; Noel Amano of the Max Planck Institute, Germany; Thomas Ingicco of the Musée de l'Homme, Paris, France; Tina Paterno of the The International Council on Monuments and Sites; and Stephen Acabado and Marlon Martin representing the University of California, Los Angeles and the Ifugao Museum.
According to Baclig, another rationale for the conception of the webinar series is to address the present confusion between the respective mandates of tourism and heritage conservation in the province.
The target audience and invitees for the conference are limited to provincial cultural workers, the academe, heritage enthusiast groups, outdoor and environmentalist organizations, provincial and regional tourism officers, government information officers, municipal government officials and focal persons on culture, the clergy, and the local media.
The sessions will be conducted through Zoom every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 to 4:30 in the afternoon, and interested participants are required to undergo pre-registration which will be limited to 100 slots.
