LEGAZPI CITY (PIA) – For the first time, Commission on Higher Education Chairperson Prospero de Vera III will visit Bicol region for a week of events next Wednesday, May 5, 2021.
De Vera will meet with the grantees of Unified Financial Assistance System for Tertiary (UNIFAST) in the region, and talk with the presidents of the higher education institutions (HEIs) and Bicol Foundation for Higher Education.
Dr. Ma. Teresa de Alban, chief education program specialist of CHED 5 disclosed during the Ugnayan sa Bicol broadcast that the dialogue aims to thresh out the concerns and needs of these stakeholders which should be acted on by CHED.
De Vera, who will be accompanied by CHED Comm. Aldrin A. Darilag and lawyer Ryan Estevez, UNIFAST head, will also conduct campus inspection in Bicol University (BU) in preparation for a limited face-to-face classes in BU.
At least five HEIs in Bicol have been issued authorization to implement limited face-to-face classes only for health-priority programs and other clerkship on the condition that they complied with all requirements on health protocols.
CHED is also set to campaign to achieve quality in higher education. Dubbed as “Sikad sa Edukasyong Kalidad: Moving forward by Claiming Victory for Philippine Higher Education,” the commission aims to strengthen the capacity of educators by supporting them to pursue and finish a masteral degree.
18 local colleges institutionalized
On May 6, Gawad Parangal for Local College will take place to recognize 18 local colleges in the region that have complied with the minimum requirements for their institutionalization.
These requirements include physical and labor facilities, dean and faculty, as well as laboratories.
De Vera will also award the universityhood to Sorsogon State College. This adds to four more universities in Bicol namely: Bicol University, Partido State University, Central Bicol State University of Agriculture, and Catanduanes State University.
The Bicol State College of Applied Sciences and Technology in Naga City was also complying with CHED’s guidelines and policy in order to be a university, De Alban said.
De Alban said that aside from free education for all enrolled students, there will be an appropriated fund for HEIs as a support to improve and enhance their instruction, research, productivity and thrust.
She said the efforts to be institutionalized led to the attainment of quality education. Thus, “if there is a quality education, graduates will become globally competitive most especially the Filipino professionals are much sought for,” De Alban said. (PIA5)
