Community in Lantawan surrenders loose firearms, sign MOU on Small Arms and Light Weapons

ISABELA CITY, Basilan Province, May 31 (PIA) — The Local Government Unit of Lantawan Municipality headed by Mayor Nursiya Ismael, together with all the Barangay Chairpersons and their representatives surrendered four (4) high-powered loose firearms to Brigadier General Domingo Gobway, the Commander of JTF – Basilan, 101st Brigade during the signing of Memorandum of Understanding on Small Arms and Light Weapons program at Barangay Atong – Atong on Thursday, 27 May 2021.


 
Brigadier General Gobway lauded the efforts of the community who surrendered these four (4) loose firearms, which includes one 5.56mm Ultimax 100 Mark, one 7.62mm M14 Rifle, one Cal .30mm M1 Garand Rifle, and one M1 Carbine.
 
 “Sa halip na bala at baril, tayo ay magpokus sa programang pangkabuhayan ng pamahalaan dahil ito ang pundasyon ng kapayapaan at kaunlaran”, BGen Gobway said.
 
Ms. Janice Zamora, resident of Lantawan, is thankful to the initiative of the 4th Special Forces Battalion and 19th Special Forces Company headed by Lieutenant Colonel Alex D Ampati. Ms. Zamora said she felt more secured because of this SALW program which prevents the children from being exposed to arms and violence. According to her, this will significantly help shape the future of the children of Lantawan.
 
“Ang programang ito ay para sa kapayapaan ng Lantawan dahil mababawasan ang mga iligal na baril at mailayo ang mga kabataan sa kapahamakan.”, Ms. Zamora expressed.
 
Captain Mark Christian Sta Ana, commanding officer of the 19th Special Forces Company, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the residents of Lantawan, especially who surrendered their firearms, for their trust and confidence to the unit.
 
“It is with great pride and honor together with PNP, LGU and the people of Lantawan, to embrace a life of long-lasting peace and fully entrust their security to the law enforcers of the government,” Capt. Sta Ana said.

Also present in the activity were Police Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Usman, the Deputy Provincial Director for Operations of Basilan PPO, Ms Nurhati Tangging of the Provincial Government, Vice Mayor Naser Abubakar, different local government agency heads, respective Barangay Officials of Lantawan, and other stakeholders.
