DA-10 seeks ways to aid farmers, fisherfolk amid pandemic

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, May 8 (PIA)--Amid challenges brought about by coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 pandemic and African Swine Fever (ASF), the Department of Agriculture (DA)-10 has come up with strategies in ensuring that the agri-fishery sector will get optimum support in attaining food security.

“The focus of the present administration emphasizing on the whole-of-government approach aims to achieve the vision of a food-secure and resilient Philippines with prosperous farmers and fisherfolk,” DA-10 Regional Director Carlene Collado said during the CORDS-X Podcast with Communications Sec. Martin Andanar, May 8.

In celebration of the Farmers’ and Fisherfolk Month, DA-10 held the groundbreaking ceremony of the poultry house in Dalwangan, Malaybalay City (May 3) and the Solar-Powered Irrigation System in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon (May 4).

The department will also have the Kadiwa ni Ani at Kita at Centrio Ayala Mall, May 9 and at DA Regional Office, May 17 to help link local farmers and fishers directly to consumers.

As for capacitating the agri-fishery sector on the skills needed to ensure production, DA-10 will hold the Young Agripreneur and Enterprise Development Training Seminar Workshop, May 24, and the Capability Enhancement Training for the Management of Livestock-Based Livelihood Project and Enterprise Development (Goat), May 17-21 at Bukidnon.

On assistance for the farmers and fisherfolk, DA-10 will have the validation of Farm and Fisheries Clustering and Consolidation (F2C2) Program identified clustered beneficiaries, May 4 as well as the continuous Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA) registration, May 3-31.

Continuous distribution of vegetable seeds will also be held, May 1-31 at DA Regional Office as well as the distribution of rice seeds and fertilizers to farmers, May 11 at Bukidnon towns.

“With emphasis of this month’s celebration ‘May Pandemiya Man o Wala, Magsasaka’t Mangingisda Maasahan sa Bansa’ will remind us that DA as One DA with the LGUs [local government units] and our farmers and fisherfolk will continue with our commitments as food security frontliners,” Collado said.

For the second quarter food sufficiency in Region 10, Collado said rice is at 67,391.83 MT that will last for 15 days, yellow corn for 170 days, white corn (638 days), pork (852 days), beef (2,093 days), poultry (691 days), and eggs (3,261 days). (RTP/PIA10)
