MISAMIS ORIENTAL, May 17 (PIA) – To provide sustainable agricultural production in their community and engage the youth in the protection of the environment's integrity, the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Gingoog City launched its “SK Survival Garden” and “Basketball Ring Trash Can” programs at the start of the coronavirus (COVID)-19 pandemic.
(This started during the COVID-19 outbreak. This SK Survival Garden was started, as it was appreciated by our mayor and vice-mayor since one of their programs is agriculture. This SK survival garden was also recognized by other barangays here in Misamis Oriental since this has been a huge help especially in the shortage of food and the loss of jobs.)
According to Mercado, the SK Survival Garden can yield up to 2-3 harvests each month with its cabbage, okra, eggplant, spinach, and more, which they would distribute to the community’s poorest of the poor. Aside from supplying food, the garden also provides opportunities for the youth to learn agriculture, and be more engaged with the community.
As for its environmental initiatives, the SK Federation of Gingoog created the “Shoot for the Environment Project," introducing “Basketball Ring Trash Cans” to make the trash disposal in designated areas more engaging and appealing to the public especially among the youth.
“Nakita nato nga grabe na ka polluted ang some areas (diri), busa kami sa SK sa baranagay 16 ug sa Gingoog City created this 'Shoot for the Environment Project',” he explained.
(We saw that some areas here are heavily polluted, so we the SK of Barangay 16 and Gingoog City created this Shoot for the environment project.)
The SK Vice-President also shared that they have installed free Wi-fi in their barangays and provide for printing services to help the students and teachers in their learning modules. (VPBautista/PIA10)
