BAGUIO CITY – The city government is preparing for a possible surge in coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases amid the looming threat of the Omicron variant, starting with the procurement and stocking of treatment pills.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong on Wednesday night said the city has still enough supply of remdesivir and dexamethasone, which are among essential medicines for Covid-19 patients.

"It will entail so many funds and it was timely that we were assured by a donor over the weekend that they are going to donate molnupiravir oral drugs which has a high efficacy rating and effective for Covid patients. This is a big help and will be a big saving," he said on the sidelines of the Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the City Hall.

Magalong said this is part of the city's action plan which is now being crafted as soon as reports about the Omicron variant came out.

"Ginagawa natin ngayon yung action plan natin para sa Omicron, it's the same thing na ginawa natin sa Delta na two and a half months bago tumama ang Delta (We are in the process of making the action plan for the Omicron which is the same as we did with the two and a half months before the Delta variant hit us)," he said.

While the city has enough supply of medical oxygen, he said they are now working to ensure a stable supply of liquid oxygen even as the city's Covid-19 situation continues to improve.

Aside from stocking up on essential supplies, Magalong said they are also preparing isolation facilities and are coordinating with hospitals to ensure that they have enough manpower to manage their Covid-19 facilities such as wards and intensive care units.

"There will be a lot of preparations in the next two months. Let us hope it does not hit us this December. I hope we will be spared," he said.

As of Tuesday, the city has a total of 92,977 confirmed cases, with 444 active infections, 90,294 recoveries, and 2,139 deaths. (PNA)
