ESSU train Hernani farmers on High Value Crop production

BORONGAN CITY, August 24 (PIA) -- The Eastern Samar State University  trained a total of 166 farmers for 18 days of intensive training on vegetable production  on August 13-14, 2020 at the Hernani Covered Court, Hernani, E. Samar.

Dr.  Judith Eljera said that the 18-day training is a collaboration effort of the Local Government Unit (LGU) – Hernani through the Office of the Municipal Agriculture Service (OMAS) and the Department of Agricultural Sciences (DAS), College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences (CANS) - ESSU-Main Campus.

Hernani town Mayor Amado Candido requested Eljera for the training as ESSU has a pool of experts in vegetable production and processing.

The training focused on value adding and vegetable crop processing.

She further said that after the training the farmers will establish vegetable techno demo farms in their respective barangays through a modern vegetable production technology.

One of the trainers demonstrated how to make Ice Cream with squash, sweet potato, malunggay, and string beans.

“Ice cream making is already an activity that proved exciting and could be a source of livelihood,”Eljera said.

Some nine farmers’ association in Hernani with 166 farmer members attended and participated in the said training.

Ms. Maridel A. Terencio, board of director of the Hernani Yolanda Survivors Beneficiaries Association (HYSBA) said that the training was useful to her.

“I’ve learned on how to process vegetable into ice cream as a source of livelihood, and on how to sell our products during this COVID-19 pandemic through the use of social media like Facebook Account and other platforms of the social media,” Terencio said.

Teresita Gagala, business manager of the Padang Coco-Organic Farmers Association (PCOFA) said that she learned which planting materials to choose for reproduction, choose vegetable materials suited to the type of and, and the climate or the weather, because not all vegetables are for dry season and wet or rainy season,” Gagala said.

Mayor Candido said that his vision of Hernani is to be an eco-tourism site with more vegetables to showcase and food sufficiency.

“I thanked the farmer participants for completing the training course, I hope that your learnings will be used for the upliftment of the economy of our municipality and the province,” Mayor Candido said.

The Vegetable Production Training and Livelihood Assistance Extension Support Education and Training Services is a training under the Yolanda Rehabilitation and Recovery Projects (YRRP). (nb/SDC/PI
