CALOOCAN CITY, Aug. 2 (PIA) -- The Makati City Government is advising its residents to be vigilant when buying poultry products, especially those coming from San Luis, Pampanga because of the presence of bird flu that can infect humans.

"We are advising our #ProudMakatizens to be vigilant when buying poultry products. Immediately inform Makati - VSD if they have information about vendors selling poultry products from San Luis, Pampanga. You may call Makati-VSD at 8889-7949 or through email at makativeterinaryoffice@gmail.com," warned City Veterinarian Ma. Katherina C. Mangahas, in a Facebook post.

Mangahas said the Makati Veterinary Services Department (VSD) is strictly monitoring all market channels in the city who are selling eggs and other poultry products.

"We are also advising our dealers to temporarily avoid acquiring eggs and poultry supplies from San Luis, Pampanga to prevent its possible transmission," she added.

The Department of Agriculture's (DA) Bureau of Animal Industry has detected the presence of the highly infectious H5N6 subtype of the influenza A virus in an egg-producing farm in San Luis town in Pampanga province on Wednesday, July 29, 2020.

The national government has quickly implemented integrated disease control measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

"Upon confirming the report, a team of veterinarians and animal health officers had immediately implemented emergency control measures, culling 38,701 poultry and disposing of the carcasses," the DA said in a statement.

According to BAI, however, no broiler farm has been affected yet, and there is no reported case of human transmission as of this moment.

"We are hoping for the cooperation of everyone," Mangahas said, as she urged residents to immediately report to the authorities any unscrupolous trader to prevent further spread of the highly pathogenic H5N6 avian influenza. (PIA NCR)
