BFAR 6 Planning Officer Joel Abalayan said fisherfolk beneficiaries came from the five coastal villages of the city namely, Sto. Nino Norte, Sto. Nino Sur, Calaparan, Calumpang and San Juan. They were identified by the DA-Office of Assistant Secretary for Visayas  Hansel Didulo.

Iloilo City mayor Jerry Treñas and the beneficiaries received the fiberglass reinforced plastic boats worth P600,000 or P60,000 each from Didulo and BFAR 6 Director Remia Aparri during the turnover ceremony held, September 22, at the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand.

Treñas said the initiative aims to deliver support for capacity enhancement to the local fisherfolk and to promote modernization of fisheries practices that will eventually help them to cope with financial challenges brought by the economic crisis.

“With that, I would like to express my utmost gratitude to DA and BFAR for a job well done, and for being a great partner of the Iloilo City Government in creating better opportunities for the people,” he said in a post on his official Facebook page. (JSC/laf/PIA6 Iloilo)
