Mayor Sara lauds arrest of those engaged in illegal cockfight

DAVAO CITY Sept. 8 (PIA) Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio lauded members of the Davao City Police Office for the arrests of 29 persons including government functionaries who defy the ban on cock derbies.

She reported the arrests of a barangay chair, a barangay kagawad and a member of the militia for violating Presidential Decree Nos. 11602 and 449, the laws governing cock fighting inside his property at San Rafael Village, Sunday afternoon this city.

Duterte-Carpio said the barangay chair identified as Mark Cayetano was a party-member of the Hugpong ng Pagbabago and has an influence being a contractor.

Also arrested were Ramon Mamontayao, a barangay councilor and Warren Comision, an alleged member of the special CAFGU.

They were arrested with 26 others and the confiscation of P245,254 bet.

“Barangay officials ought to be examples as law-abiding citizens,” Duterte-Carpio stressed.

She said barangay officials must not be examples in breaking the law.

Duterte-Carpio pointed out that cock derby can really cause mass gathering contrary to the doctor’s advice, allowing only few numbers of people to gather around.

She maintained a cock derby would cause the rise of COVID-19 cases.  (PIA XI-Joey Sem G. Dalumpines)
