BORONGAN CITY, Oct. 17 (PIA) -- The Tau Gamma Fraternity of Eastern Samar through the “Project Angel Tree” of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) gave school supplies and food packs to 262 child laborers in the municipality of Can-avid, Dolores and Oras.
According to Engr. Aleksie Ceasar D. Abellar, OIC Provincial Head of DOLE-Eastern Samar Field-Office (DOLE-ESFO), through the said program, DOLE-ESFO in coordination with Tau Gamma Fraternity and in line with their 52nd Anniversary distributed food packs and school supplies to 145 identified child laborers in Dolores, 73 identified child laborers in Oras, and 44 identified child laborers in Can-avid respectively.
Project Angel Tree, a component of the DOLE’s Child Labor Prevention and Elimination Program, provides an array of assistance and services that may include food, clothing, educational supplies, and even work and training opportunities made available by sponsors or benefactors (“angels”) to child laborers and their parents.
Abellar said the said program, in coordination with its social partners, provided food, clothes, shoes, bags, and school supplies and scholarships/educational assistance to child laborers and livelihood assistance to their parents.
“Child laborers find themselves forced to drop out of school so that they could work to supplement the family income or simply support themselves,” Abellar said.
The provincial head added that child laborers were identified through the assigned community facilitators in DOLE-ESFO by profiling of vulnerable child laborers in different barangays in Eastern Samar.
Project Angel Tree aims to uplift the lives of child laborers and return them back to school for their education through livelihood and employment opportunities for their parents.
“The Project Angel Tree” is a manifestation of the joint efforts of the government and the private sector in keeping children away from dangerous workplaces. (nbq/SDC/PIA-E. Samar)
