Ilocos Sur records first COVID-19 death

ILOCOS SUR, Nov. 1 (PIA) – The province of Ilocos Sur recorded its first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) fatality on Saturday, October 31.
 
In a statement, Governor Ryan Luis Singson said that the patient, referred to as IS-C77, is a 73-year-old male local from Barangay Farola in Tagudin town.  
 
He was brought to the Ilocos Sur District Hospital-Tagudin due to cardiopulmonary arrest on October 26 and was successfully revived and stabilized.
 
He was referred to the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center in San Fernando City, La Union thereafter for further assessment and management.
 
On his fourth day at the hospital, he was to be discharged but was deferred when he developed a fever.
 
This prompted RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) testing which turned out positive. Result of which was released Saturday, Oct. 31.
 
IS-C77 was pronounced dead at 9:10 on the evening of October 30.
 
The Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur condoles with the family.
 
“This shows that no amount of mitigation protocol can protect us from the virus. Let us all, therefore, do our part in protecting ourselves and continue to heal as one,” Governor Singson said.
 
Aside from IS-C77, the province also recorded another confirmed COVID-19 positive case on Saturday.
 
The patient, referred to as IS-C78, is a 32-year-old female local from Barangay Lubnac in Tagudin.
 
She is asymptomatic and immunocompromised.
 
She has a travel history in La Union and has broad contacts.
 
Details on the perimeters of the zoning containment strategy will be announced by the municipality of Tagudin.
 
To date, Ilocos Sur has recorded a total of 78 cases of COVID-19, three of which are active cases, while 74 have recovered from the disease. (JCR/AMB/PIA Ilocos Sur)
