POPCOM-6 records 20,992 new family planning acceptors

ILOILO CITY, Dec. 28 (PIA) --- The Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) in Western Visayas said that a total of 20,992 new family planning (FP) acceptors were recorded in Region 6, amid the pandemic due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The figure was based on the Responsible Parenthood and Family Planning (RPFP) online monitoring system maintained by POPCOM-6, as of December 15, 2020.

POPCOM-6 regional director Harold Alfred Marshall said that the community volunteers played a vital role in this feat.

“We need to adjust with the current situation and there is no other way but to mobilize and empower our community volunteers who are touch-based in their respective barangays since limited mobility is being implemented,” he said.

To adjust to the new normal and in strict compliance with the health and safety protocols, POPCOM capacitated Barangay Population Volunteers on the so-called “bahay-bahay” strategy so as to continue with the advocacy.

Negros Occidental reported a total of 4,912 new FP acceptors; Iloilo City recorded 2,391; Aklan with 1,414; and Capiz, 1,099.

According to POPCOM-6, preferred FP methods are oral contraceptive pills, DMPA or injectable and subdermal implants.

New family planning users are being provided with correct information on FP prior to acceptance of the method, as stipulated in Republic Act 10354, otherwise known as Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012. (JSC/LTP/PIA6 Iloilo/Thumbnail photo courtesy of POPCOM-6)
