BARMM strengthens nutritional response through RPAN 2020-2022

COTABATO CITY, Mar. 1 (PIA) -- The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), through its Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC), is strengthening its response on nutritional challenges through the launching of the Regional Plan of Action for Nutrition (RPAN) 2020-2022.

National Nutrition Council-BARMM Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Dr. Kadil Sinolinding said during the launching that the RPAN is a document representing the aspiration of Bangsamoro in terms of nutrition and health.

“It is designed for the region, evidence-based, and more importantly consistent with the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition, approved by the former ARMM government in 2018 until its final approval for BARMM by the regional nutrition committee on January 25, 2021,” he said.

The RPAN consists of 11 programs and 53 projects.

These include nutrition-sensitive and nutrition-specific programs, covering problems on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) and its first 1,000 days, dietary supplementation, micronutrients and supplementation, nutrition promotion for behavior change, mandatory food fortification, nutrition in emergencies, Philippine Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (PIMAM), adolescent health, overweight and obesity management intervention, and nutrition-sensitive and enabling program.

Moreover, the said programs follow certain stages set by the Department of Health (DOH) and major programs of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022. Additional programs are also included to reflect the huge challenge of adolescent health, particularly on the prevalence of pregnancy in BARMM.

Meanwhile, ministries and offices from the BARMM government along with other stakeholders also vowed to end the malnutrition in the region.

Also, international partner agencies such as the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), World Food Program (WFP), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)-UN, and Health Organization for Mindanao (HOM) gave their support.

BARMM Chief Minister Ahod ‘Al Haj Murad’ Ebrahim, through a video message, noted that the launching of RPAN 2020-2022 allows to see another aspect of rebuilding the Bangsamoro, particularly at this time of pandemic. (LTBolongon-PIA Cotabato City)
