PDEA-10 to step up village drug clearing program

OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental, Mar. 26 (PIA)—The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA)-10 targets to strengthen the barangay drug clearing program to encourage village officials to practice self-governing powers to prevent the entry of illegal drugs.

To ensure the establishment, operation and sustainability of Balay Silangan programs in the city, PDEA conducted an orientation for validation process in maintaining and sustaining the status of all drug cleared barangays to the barangay captains in City held at the Oroquieta Gymnasium.

“The reason why we want to empower the barangays is that no matter where the shabu comes from, whether it's inside or outside the country, they will always make its way into the barangay so we really have to strengthen our barangays," PDEA Agent Patricio Alerta, Jr. said.

Alerta encouraged the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (BADAC) to do their responsibilities to watch over their respective barangay.

For his part, Mayor Lemuel Acosta said, “Gikahinanglan ang panaghiusa aron makab-ot ang kalinaw sa atong lugar ug matubag ang panawagan sa atong Presidente Rodrigo Roa Duterte.”

(We need unity to achieve peace and order in our city, and to respond to the call of our President Rodrigo Roa Duterte)

Acosta said the intensified anti-drug efforts of the government have made a big impact on drug dependents and pushers that led to their voluntary submission to authorities. Effective mechanisms are in place to ensure their reintegration to society, to recover and become productive citizens again.

Acosta urged the local officials to intensify anti-drug efforts of the government.

PLtCol Ian Melfin Burlat assured that the Philippine National Police (PNP) is always present at all times but they need the cooperation of the barangay to successfully crack down on illicit drugs.

For Oroquieta City, 45 barangays have already been cleared from illegal drugs by PDEA-10. (SMRN/PIA Misamis Occidental)
