PASIG CITY, May 5 (PIA) -- In observance of the National Road Safety Month this May, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), in coordination with other concerned agencies, continues to strengthen the enforcement of traffic rules and regulations with emphasis on the common causes of accidents in Metro Manila.
Presidential Proclamation No. 115-A declares the month of May as Road Safety Month to promote road safety and raise awareness on traffic rules, reduce casualties due to road accidents.
It also highlights the devastation of road death and injury and encourages people to take action to prevent suffering that result from crashes and casualties.
The said campaign aims to impart knowledge on road safety, especially on the dangers of standing in vehicle blind spots and jaywalking.
It is important to check blind spots, especially when looking out for young children.
The most common areas that drivers miss out are the immediate front of the cabin and the rear of the vehicle.
It is also important to focus on safe driving habits like wearing seat belts and the keeping of speed limits. It is vital that drivers adopt safe driving habits as one moment of carelessness could end in tragedy.
Based on MMDA's Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System (MMARAS) in 2020, a total of 65,032 accidents were reported, with 337 fatalities, 14,465 non-fatalities and 50,230 incurred damage to properties. (PIA NCR)
