Sta. Maria LGU supports DTI’s bamboo dev’t project

CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela, May 2 (PIA) - The Local Government Unit of Sta. Maria has approved an ordinance supporting the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) Bamboo Development Project.

The ordinance will enable the LGU to adopt the establishment of bamboo nurseries and plantations in the town to boost the BDP where bamboo propagules will be planted in watershed areas, flood and landslide-prone areas, idle and marginalized agricultural lands and upland areas covered under Community-Based Forest Management(CBFM) and in other bodies of water in the town.

Winston Singun, DTI Isabela head said that based on studies, bamboos have the ability to efficiently absorb excess water and bind the soil together, thus, reducing soil erosion and silting of water bodies.

He added  that bamboos can provide source of income to local residents and other processors or manufacturers wit its raw materials.

Santa Maria is the fifth municipality to pass the said ordinance in the province of Isabela following the towns of San Manuel, Quirino, San Guillermo, and Santiago City. (BME/MGE/PIA 2-Isabela)
